LANDSCAPES

Living for over 50 years in Wiltshire, many of David’s landscapes depict Salisbury Plain and the Vale of Pewsey including the White Horse at Alton Barnes and the Pill Box outside Horton overlooking the Kennet and Avon Canal. Ancient landmarks such as Silbury Hill and the Cerne Abbas Giant in Dorset also feature on numerous occasions throughout the changing seasons.

TREES

A fascination for native trees especially when in blossom such as English Hawthorn prevalent along the Wiltshire roadways and hedgerows are firm favourites along with Oak Ash and Horse Chestnut.

 

WEST BAY

Celebrating his long relationship with Dorset , David would drive down after teaching in Bristol in the early 1970s with his friend the painter and fellow tutor Alf Stockham

BIRDS

A bird watcher from his early childhood at Biggin Hill they have continued to appear in much of his work.

GARDENS

Gardens are a favourite subject ; often formal with topiary sparked by visits to Montecute House or Painswick Churchyard or simple allotments which formed part of townscape of Devizes viewed from St Johns Churchyard. A bell tent a firm reminder of childhood scout camps including his first visit to Wiltshire to pitch in the grounds of Lacock Abbey.
